These days there are those that believe children should enroll in school as early as they can; whereas others think they should not enter school until they are, at the minimum, seven years of age. This essay shall explore both viewpoints; however, in my opinion, I believe the best age to first go to school is neither of the above, but is in fact five years old.

One of the main reasons why children should enroll in school as early as possible is because it is felt that the younger the student, the easier it is for the child to learn the basics in both math and language, as well as the fundamentals in good behavior such as discipline. If a child can learn basic numbers and calculations, for example, then by the age of six they will already be further ahead than those who enrolled in school at an older age. Likewise, learning study habits, adapting to a new environment, and being able to follow rules, will all benefit the child at a later age.

On the other hand, starting school at a later age of seven or older is beneficial for the child’s creativity, as the child will have ample time to play and imagine before enrolling. Developing the imagination is thought of as a key ingredient for children to develop a higher form of abstract and creative thinking. Additionally, going to school at a later age allows for the child to receive parental and family socialization; though granted, in many countries this point may be considered moot, since many nuclear families do not have the resources for one parent to stay at home full-time.

In conclusion, though children going to school as early as possible is a sound concept in theory in that it allows children to acquire the basics in math and language early on, it does prevent the child from exploring their own self-will at an early age, an important component of being creative. Conversely, enrolling at the late age of seven or older would most likely put enormous strain on parents; thus, the best age, it seems to me, is to first enroll in school at the age of five.
